You also still have dollar bills, which is interesting. We switched over to coins for £1 and £2 ages ago, and our currencies are worth a similar amount.

in my opinion the optimal currency values are:
1, 3, 10, 30, 100, 300
and maybe 1000, 3000

in terms of amount of printing in ratio to making change you can't do better.

with 3's you can get any number between 1 an 999 with three of each currency.
