…but they affect the sounds of the letters after them.
In particular, <u> between a <q> and a vowel is pretty much always /w/, but <kuiet> might be pronounced something like /ˈkju.i.ɛt/ (CUE-ee-et) or something.
And <q> could be pronounced /tʃ/ (ch), like in words borrowed from Chinese, though the rest of the word doesn't look Chinese. (…could be a combination of a Chinese-derived word and some other word, though, like a portmanteau of qi and kitty or something)
