From the burning Sprawl to the diseased Foetor, the long road will challenge your strategies and your endurance.
Journey to the Mountain and face down the terrifying manifestations of your weaknesses.



Darkest Dungeon 2 is a Dayless Mafia setup. This setup will focus heavily on deduction and night play. Players will have a very limited ability to interact with each other, so must use the resources that they have at their disposal efficiently to figure out who their allies and enemies are. This setup is aimed to be relatively low impact in terms of time-commitment to players.

The flavour is inspired by Darkest Dungeon 2. Flavour knowledge is generally not required, but knowing the characters and basic premise could be somewhat helpful.

This setup is experimental. I will do my best to ensure a fun and enjoyable, but I can't guarantee balance.

Please do not post in this thread without explicit permission from the mod (even confirmation).

Rules
General Rules

• Please remember that this is a game. Be respectful to other players and have fun.
• Do not post in the main thread for any reason unless the mod has specifically said you are allowed to.
• You are not allowed to quote your role PM or send any images, metadata, or any other information pertaining to your role PM.
• Players must be aware of their role and play to their wincon
• Players may not use ChatGPT or other LLM to craft their messages.
• Players are not allowed to use encryption or similar systems

Private Channels

• Each player will have a private thread on Discord in which they may document their thoughts. These threads are only accessible to the player and information posted here will not be revealed to other players during play.
• Communication via mod, including questions related to the setup or roles, must be done through your private channel.
• Players should indicate Messages and Actions that they wish to send/perform in their private channel. Please do not attempt to send messages directly to other players.
• Some players will have access to temporary or permanent private chat with each other. These chats may be open during the exploration phase, the campfire phase, or both, depending on the ability. Private chats do not count toward your wordcount.

Phases

• The game will be divided into a number of Night phases. Each night phase will in turn be divided into Exploration rounds and Campfire rounds. Exploration phases focus primarily on messaging; campfire phases focus on actions.
• Each player will have 3 action points that they can use to take actions.
• Some actions can only be used during the exploration phase; others can only be used during campfire. Generally, exploration actions will be messaging adjacent; campfire actions will be more traditional mafia night actions, though there may be a few exceptions.
• Players cannot take the same action twice during a round (e.g. if a player has an exploration action worth 1 point, it may use it on three separate rounds, but not three times in the same round).
• Players may take multiple different actions during a given round if they have the points to do so.
• Each Night will have multiple exploration rounds, followed by one campfire round. Action points will be refilled at the start of the night. The rounds will proceed as follows:
• N1: 4x exploration rounds. 1x campfire round
• N2+: Action points refilled, 2x exploration rounds. 1x campfire round

Exploration rounds

• Each exploration round lasts 24 hours.
• Players will be allowed to send messages to other players each round as long as they have the words to do so. Messages may only be sent to players, not roles.
• Not all players have the same number of words or may be limited in the number of messages that they can send/receive.
• Leftover words will NOT be carried over to future rounds
• Exploration actions will trigger at the end of the round, after messages are sent, but before they are received.
• Messages will always be signed, either with your player name or your role name, your choice.
• All player and role names count as one word regardless of their actual length.
• Players are generally not allowed to portmanteau words together to shorter their wordcount. E.g. A message reading “KillLaserGuyHeIsScum” is not acceptable. Players are expected to make a good faith effort to keep their wordcounts and not abuse the messaging rules and obvious attempts to circumvent these is not permitted. If you aren’t sure what is acceptable, please ask.
• Hyphenated words count as a single word.
• Players exceeding their wordcount will have their messages truncated.
• Common contractions (it's, didn't, etc.) count as one word.
• Acronyms or initialisms (wtf, etc.) will generally count for their full wordcount.
• Messages may only be in text. Simple embellishments like bold or italics may be added for emphasis. Images, emojis, sound recordings, etc. are not permitted.

Campfire Rounds

• The campfire round will last 48 hours.
• Campfire actions can be taken during this round. These will generally be processed according to Natural Action Resolution, or as close as possible.
• Players are not allowed to send or receive messages during campfire round.
• Every player will have access to a killing action of some sort. The exact mechanics of this kill will vary from player to player.

Return to sender (1 action point): Target a player of your choice. Any messages sent by that player during this exploration phase will not be delivered and will be returned to them unopened.

Campfire Actions:
One-shot Kill (3 action points): Target a player of your choice. If nothing prevents you from doing so, that player will be killed and eliminated from the game. Flavour text for your kill will be your target was stabbed by a pitchfork.

You are aligned with Town. You win when all threats to Town are eliminated.

Mod note: This game consists of 7 Town and 2 Mafia. There are no independent roles.

Few general reminders for messaging and actions:

All of your messages must be signed. This can either be with your rolename or your player name, your choice. If you don't say, I will assume it is your player name. This does not count toward your word total.

E.g. a received message will look like:
LaserGuy is scum, don't trust him!

Actions and abilities may only target players. You can't target someone's role without knowing who they are.

You leave behind the valley, the last vestige of the civilized world, following a rutted, pockmarked road on a clumsy stagecoach. The road is long and treacherous; the air reeks of death and the land seemed festered and decayed. You set up a crude camp, a handful of scattered campfires surrounding the coach. One by one you begin to drift off into a dark and troubled sleep.

You are awakened by a terrible scream. Leaping to your feet, you begin to search the area. One of the your campfires has gone out, one of your companions has disappeared into the endless blackness. After a fruitless search for your companion, you decide to press on. You will get no more sleep.

And the mountain awaits...


Madge, Town Occultist, was killed in the night and was eliminated from the game.

You pass through the remains of what was once a village. Crumbling buildings, hollowed out by flame, dot the landscape. The once proud cobblestone road is torn up, going is slow and treacherous. After an hour of veering through the desolate streets, you hear a loud crack as one of the wheels on the coach finally gives out. You have no choice but to stop and make camp while you attempt to repair the couch.

As you rest, the sounds of scuffle breaks out. Rushing over, you see one of your compatriots lying in the mud, skull crushed a blunt weapon. Was it the madness that overlook him? Or one of you? As you wander back, you notice the coach shrouded in shadow, and hear a thin scream coming from within the shadows. Gathering the light, you rush to the coach, and find that the wainwright has vanished. Thankfully, they at least managed to fix the wheel before the darkness overtook them. Another sacrifice to the Mountain.

Deadbananas, Town Crusader, was killed in the night and was eliminated from the game.

Every cause needs a champion, a hero to rally otherwise common men to a righteous cause and lead them to victory. The Crusader is that champion. With holy blade in hand he smites the wicked and sends them back to the darkness from whence they crept. While his armor restricts his movement it affords him great protection, allowing him to stand in the frontlines to take the blows that his weaker comrades cannot.

  • Target a player of your choice. That player will receive an extra 30 words in the next exploration round. You may send an extra message to that player. You may not self target.

  • Bulwark of Faith (1 action point): Target the player sharing your campfire. While you are standing guard, any killing actions targeting them will target you instead. Your campfire partner will be aware that this occurred.

The darkness closes in. The Flame of Hope flickers, fading rapidly. Out the darkness, you begin to see monstrosities, creatures of madness and horror to contemplate.

An axle breaks. The stagecoach pitches to the side, toppling you. You hear screams, as well as some ancient, primordial eldritch sound that sears the mind. You turn and flee, stumbling over the corpses of your companions, trying to escape the abominations before they can reach you, before your mind breaks.

Glancing over your shoulder, you see the faint light of the Flame of Hope, slowly dying, silhouetted against the vast Mountain that defeated you. Then all goes dark.

Sinister and precise, the Bounty Hunter specializes in targeting a single foe to deliver its head for the reward. He has found that simply striking before thinking is an ineffective way to kill, so he has taught himself many ways to take advantage of his foe's vulnerabilities.

An old, battle-scarred veteran, the Man-at-Arms has seen enough war and bloodshed to last more than a dozen lifetimes. While he can no longer swing his great mace with the force he once could, you should not stand where he swings his mighty weapon. However it is not offense, but his defense, that makes the Man-at-Arms such a vital member of any team. His ability to read the enemy's movements allows him to draw fire to himself to defend his allies and then retaliate with surprising force.

Alignment: You are aligned with Town. You win when all threats to Town are eliminated.

Weapon: Mace

  • Bellow (1 action point): You may send a message of up to 8 words to all players. This message cannot be blocked or modified in any way and is always signed “Man at Arms”. This message only costs a maximum of 8 words from your total.

  • One-Shot Hold the Line (2 action points): Target a player of your choice. If that player was targeted by any killing actions, those actions are prevented.
  • One-Shot Command (2 action points): Target a player of your choice. You will learn what type of night action(s) that player took during this campfire phase. The action will be described as one of KILLING, INVESTIGATIVE, PROTECTIVE, DISRUPTIVE, or OTHER.
  • One-Shot Stand Fast (2 action points): Target a player of your choice. That player will be prevented from taking any killing actions.
  • One-Shot Crush (3 action points): Target a player of your choice. If nothing prevents you from doing so, that player will be killed and eliminated from the game. Flavour text for your kill will be your target was slain by a mace.
  • One-Shot Courageous Abandon (3 action points): All of your other one-shot abilities will recharge. This ability does not recharge.

Good fortune is a rare and wondrous thing. She straggled from place to place, drenched and hungry, until a kindly woodsman and his wife happened upon her. Childless themselves, they welcomed her into their home, where she warmed herself in the glow of their hearth and hearts. She would stay up long into the night, tending the fire. Captivated by its shifting hues, she thrilled to the eerie dance of spark and ember, running her fingers absentmindedly over the scars that patterned her arm. The hearthlight seemed somehow alive, and in these private moments, she yearned to reach out and be touched once against by its searing embrace.

  • Douse (1 action point): Target a player. That player will be doused with fuel.
  • One-Shot Immolate (3 actions): All players previously doused with fuel will be ignited and killed. Ignited players cannot be protected through normal means. The flavor of your kill will be your target was incinerated.

The Grave Robber is a versatile and nimble combatant, moving back and forth through the ranks with ease. She strikes without warning and retreats to the shadows, continuing her assault at range. It is said that since the dawn of time Mankind has been born with an instinctive fear of the darkness; a fear of the stalking predators in the night, a fear for the poisonous and bloodsucking horrors that crawl in the deepest darkness; and a fear for the unknown and unseen things that dwell in the darkest shadows, just out of sight of human eyes. These primordial fears are justified, for there is a creature, a predator that not only haunts the collective nightmares of mankind, but patiently waits until the last glowing embers of light have died and the deep, suffocating darkness claim dominion before it strikes.

An elusive being with a hobby more sinister than gathering harmless trinkets, it travels through the corridors of the dungeons, draw to collecting the severed heads of fallen heroes he comes across. A tall and terrifying figure – a King in Yellow, a Desecrator of Graves and Bodies, a Beheader of Corpses, a Taker of Heads. The Collector may be shaped like a man, dressed as a man, but the similarity ends there and it was no human being. Its head, an exposed human skull, is wreathed in blue flames and rattled unnaturally in its cage, it’s thick yellow coat that reached where its feet would be, leaving only the creature’s skeletal hands and ghastly skull exposed.

Alignment: You are aligned with mafia. You win when mafia has equal or greater numbers than Town.

Exploration Actions:
  • Assume Identity (1 action point): Target a player. You will learn that player’s rolename and weapon type. These will be added to your Collection.
  • Share campfire (1 action point): Target a player of your choice. The player will receive a message stating that you wish to share their campfire for the night. If they accept, then you will have chat privileges with them during the next Campfire phase. You may only share one campfire per night.
  • Collection: Any role that you have targeted with the “assume identity” ability is added to your collection. You may sign your messages with any of your assumed identities, as well as your safeclaim “Flagellent”. If a player in your collection dies, they are removed from your collection.
Campfire Actions
  • Factional Kill: Lifesteal (1 action point): Target a player of your choice. If nothing prevents you from doing so, that player will be killed and eliminated from the game. Only one of you or your partner may use the factional kill each campfire phase. Flavour text for your kill will be that their soul was ripped out. You may replace this flavor with that of any weapon from a role in your collection.
  • Collective Protection: If you are targeted by a killing action, you will sacrifice three of your collected identities to avoid death.
