Tales of Desolation mafia Day 2
Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
This is going to be off the dome, without a reread. FYI, I'm aiming to never have to do a full reread.
Town
6. ahippo - Very clearly town. Maybe the timing was more clear as it happened instead of rereading the history all at once, but he clearly was thinking about his role and how to use it, decided he had absolutely no idea who was town so wanted to just make sure he affected someone who actually has a power. This thought process only happens from a player who sincerely has the motivator role or someone who's very very good at playing a fake role, and frankly ahippo isn't the second one.
9. Bop - Very sincere town, townie zeal, especially on topics like defending ahippo. And that thing I pointed out before that I liked whatever that was.
1. Mak - Very townie attitude. Sincerely held conviction when scum hunting. The emotion is real and I suspect that is not in Mak's scum range to fake.
11. Freddino - I'm slightly convinced by the "multiball" post but I'm not happy about the precedent of rewarding someone almost breaking the rules. But I guess that's how it is. I don't think it was faked so probably town.
13. heuristically_alone - As I said I like the conviction of his last posts and this has raised him from neutral to townie.
Town Lean
3. Moody - His thoughtful take on JC seems sincere. He's Sabrar and Bessie reads are phoned in. I'm still processing, so neutral but my read on this slot is likely to change. But JC would be a good "easy missyeet" so defending JC when no one else is is pretty townie.
14. Madge - I'm slightly convinced by LG's point. And I think LG would make that point as scum or town. Although if LG is scum she could be a buddy.
4. Wam - Slightly townie, has asked some good questions iirc. I'd like more real content.
5. Sabrar - I agree with his entire reads list (except regarding me but I believe he sincerely got there). Some slight suspicion that his first jab at me was "Oh no, I'm scum again and have to hide from town!boomfrog AGAIN!" because I know he was sweating bullets in our last game together. - Town leaning
12. JC - Regardless of moody's alignment I agree with his point that JC seems to be trying to pay attention at least. It's pretty mild though. Definitely trying to skate by regardless of alignment.
Scum lean
15. Laserguy - Almost neutral, I like his madge read, but his content is easily faked as Sabrar said. I'm against a D1 yeet here though since I have sympathy for getting wagoned just for being low energy. I think he will resolve his slot with time on future days.
2. EGW - Engaged and going through the proper motions. Slightly scummy leaning but I won't say why yet, since I'm hoping to see townieness evidence happen organically.
10. Bessie - Will likely change after her big weekend content.
7. TehBubblez - I don't like any of their explanations for their actions. I'm going to double check before placing my vote though.

Yeah, I do have that background hesitance that the whole game feels like it's sorting into "standard D1 natural scumminess order". Which means of course that several of our scum are very good players. Not a surprise with this lineup.EGW wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 8:40 pmI like your response a lot. Bubbles seems like elim bait to me. I think town are more likely to post that they are going to mostly do nothing the whole phase nonchalantly, and the omgus vote feels annoyed newb town to me, definitely not survival focused. I also like unprompted content. I agree with you on Heury, but I don't think Bubbles is scum for it due to his previous posts.

Isn't the nature of a random vote to be to not give the reason for it?TehBubblez wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2025 8:12 pmNah I just wanted the reasoning since you said nothing to go with it. This feels like real OMGUS. It's not townie conviction that the attacker is scum. It's "you want to fight let's fight" it should be "you are unreasonable and therefore motivated by scumminess."TehBubblez wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2025 8:54 pmI really don't think asking for reasoning is that big of an issue, and you are drawing an awful lot of attention to it, but if you want to opp this hard on me that's fine buddy
Vote: Makhaira
I agree with Bop that the "it was never serious" looks bad. But I actually like theBubblez reason here. This would have been a better explanation to give immediately, but it is a good reason to unvote when coming back.TehBubblez wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 8:29 pmI've been busy for two days and haven't been able to read back and get actual good reads on anyone past that point, so not knowing what Mak looks like anymore and wanting to hold off judgement until I backread seems valid instead of having a dumb OMGUS vote out there, that's all. The vote might still go back to Mak, but not until I read.Bop wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 8:22 pmI've got to say I feel a lot worse with this added. See, this whole things seems like you don't relish interaction. If you relished it you'd have wanted to engage more, you'd have challenged Mak about their other reads, or tried to convince others that Mak is scum. Relish interaction and "try to coast through D1" (quoted below) seem to be contradictory. Getting upset here feels like "scum caught for the wrong reason" which, from experience is very frustrating. I believe the upset is real, but I don't think it's coming from the reason you say it is.TehBubblez wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 5:16 am Alright, I'm here, let's address some things.
I was more asking how Mak selected me to place a vote on, which was explained. If it was just left at "Picked from players I've never played with" that would have been fine to me. IMO Why me? = Fry me rarely ever works.Makhaira wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2025 7:36 pmI just picked a random person Id never played with from the roster, it was an RVS voteTehBubblez wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2025 6:23 pm

I do relish interaction, that isn't why I got upset. I got upset because I truly feel like I wasn't posting like I was saying "But there are 13 other slots to vote" like you seem to think, I just wanted to know for sure why you put your vote on me, that's all. That is also why I said it was understandable that you did vote for me, because I suspected it was "I've never played with this one" more than anything else.

Very much, see above
Okay I think that's definitely way too much about myself, but anyway, post about reads incoming
We'll see if the incoming read list can change my mind. @EGW what do you think of my analysis?
Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
Also, @Sabrar what do you think of my analysis of bubblez?
Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
It's a "let's agree to disagree" type of thing.
Situational. I tend to give a reason if I stray away from a default vote on wam. Plus it can be funny or just cordial like moody on ahippo.
I agree that it is "you want to fight let's fight" and fulfills the technical requirements of being an OMGUS vote, however the comment preceding it takes away the edge of the vote in my mind and that's why I can accept the 'it was never serious' argument.
This is your interpretation to which you are entitled. It is not mine but I can't argue against it.

I don’t agree and I think this is an invalid defense. Can you explain why Fred’s setup spec points to Fred being town because I don’t see that at all.heuristically_alone wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 1:14 amThere's more evidence now of town though. Such as the fact he thought the game could be a multiball.LaserGuy wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 7:11 pmFred has done this every game he has played. This is more of a general statement and not directed specifically at TehBubblez, I sympathize with your feelings, but the glut of declarations at the start of every game about Day 1 makes me suspicious. And I will explain why. The majority of us start the game with no information, D1 haters are not alone in this. Most of us will fumble with our early reads, accuse or clear someone wrongly, and perhaps even post a solve without even realizing it. We will also say something that will be seized upon on D3 as proof of scumminess or towniness. And we will be accused of not being on the correct wagons. There’s a lot of big egos in this game (mine included) and we like to be right but sometimes we’re wrong (I would like to take a friendly jab here at Mak which I can do because he knows it’s out of love and not spite). I believe D1 is the most important day for content and if I make it to late game I often find what I need in D1 to help with the solve. So I encourage everyone to post what they think or feel and don’t worry about being wrong because you won’t be the only one that is wrong. Posting any content even if it is an unorganized spew is the best thing you can do to help town. I will be suspicious of anyone not posting and using “I hate and suck at D1” as an excuse.TehBubblez wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 5:16 am I am very much in the "Hate And Also Quite Bad At Day 1" camp.
It’s more of a quirky bessie thing than a thing but I’m a quirky puppy.
Yea you are raising the next generation of mafia players! And I appreciate the effort to catch up.TehBubblez wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 7:06 am I wish I saw this sooner! Yeah like stated before, I've been playing Mafia on and off for years, recently played a little bit with Discord Mafia. I love the "Gotcha" feeling you get with this game whenever it happens. I also love the different flavors, roles, and game styles people come up with, it's always fun trying something new.
Preferred pronouns are He/Him, I am a father and have the dad energy to match, my kiddo is 16 months old, so still new to it lol, looking forward to playing this with all of you, truly! (even if I seemed a bit heavy handed earlier)
If ahippo doesn’t come back and post some content I don’t feel the urgency to move my vote. He has done three of the top things I consider scummy (claim, rolefish, disappear) and you should know by now that I don’t clear based on claims.Sabrar wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 2:57 pm bessie: her limited availability and chosen playstyle leads to her content being mostly reactionary and at a very consistent level, which means I don't have my hopes up of getting a good read based on her D1. I have no issues with the topics she chose to address, I see no big tells in either direction, my one concern is her keeping the vote on ahippo 'on principle' and 'nowhere to move to'. I know she is stubborn but this might be a case of scum!bessie trying too hard to emulate her townie game. Just a suspicion.
I find your first two statements valid and acceptable, but still not an excuse for not posting content. How about some reads on other players while you are waiting for LaserGuy to answer?Freddino18 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 5:19 pm I'm not engaging with what-ifs and this-is-my-meta this game. I do not care about your avatar and fluff period is over. How about some reads?Freddino18 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 5:42 pm I never use a pfp from the franchise in question, and I try to stay away from being on-the-nose. For instance, if I was a flying laser ass pumpkin, I would avoid choosing Jack Skellington with the pumpkin on his head, but I might choose something like Chewbacca.
For me, it's reading my role, alignment, and flavor, and then saying "who does that remind me of?" and then selecting that as a Mood for the game. I love injecting that decision with a bit of mysticism during the games, as it gives me a starting point to engage with other players during the fluff period.

the fact that bubblez disappeared for so long after the exchange just made me feel more confident of it being a scumslot but I was def overselling my confidence to try to sell the wagonSabrar wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 5:21 pmWhy did you go from 'not tunneling, just pressure' to 'seriously this is scum'?
Also just for my own understanding: what is the expected outcome of a 'pressure' vote? Are you hoping that the slot will suddenly improve their content, do you expect a claim, are you looking to see who joins the wagon?
Im hoping to pressure the slot to produce more content that I can use to better sort, AND im trying to see who is willing to vote there and who isn't
Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
I dont think scum!EGW continues to push hippo after a claim like that, could be wrong tho not a clear by a long shot
Sab trends townie to me still
I agree with him that laser and boom do feel a little off but I dont think they are good plays today
Im not sure bubblez retrospective on our early interaction is authentic, not jiving with this re-entry to the game, def down to stack this wagon up
Fred and jc are slots im not enthused about and could be compromise yeets for me
Moody feels diff than last game and he was scum there so light townlean here
Heury is tricky, I feel a little more WIM this game than normal tho which Im not sure how to read
Bop can stay, like that they arent afraid to leave papertrail
Prob gonna try to reread tonight to see if anything pings

Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
Fred you did this to me last game, you kept teasing that you would be posting some content and never delivered. So until I see something, in my mind you are just running down the clock so you don't have to commit to any opinions.
Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
Ok the band is done rehearsing and I can hear myself think! Here’s my reads, off the top of my head without a detailed reread.
Woof
bessie – The puppiest player in the game.
Bop – I like Bop. Bop has been consistently posting, answering questions, and posted a complete reads list on Thursday which was relatively early in the game. Town lean.
Makhaira – I feel he is town, and is on my reread list.
Madge – Is totally Madge. Madge likes playing as mafia (on a team) and puts a lot more effort into the game when she is mafia. She feels disengaged just enough that I don’t think she has a partner, but could still be indie. So neutral leaning not-mafia for now.
moody7277 – Moody feels a little more reserved than usual but is still within his consistent moody mafia meta.
Sabrar – I feel Sabrar is off but am willing to chalk it up to his RL issues. I don’t want to do a deep dive on his content today.
Boomfrog – Is... not as boomfroggy as usual. I’m not sure how I feel about that re his alignment but based on his content thus far (questioning, reads list, and I feel his opinions are his own) I have a town lean.
heuristically_alone – Heury is usually a light poster but I feel he has been making a good effort to post, which is a point in his favor. I also feel his opinions are his own and I don’t see him as concerned about conforming or following others, and he doesn’t seem like he is just trying to make it to the end of the day (reference: Fred). Heury is not on my on my elim list.
TehBubblez – He has been busy and got into the game late, but I feel that he made a decent catch-up. I like that he answered questions and posted opinions, though I don’t feel he has adequately explained why he is voting for heury.
EGW – I expect more from him at this point, but I am making allowance because he got started a few days late. So I’m kinda neutral on him for now, at least until I see his reads list. Regardless, I would not vote for EGW today because if he is town, he is a very good player and will be an important asset later in the game, and if he is scum he should be easy to sort because he has trouble keeping a strong momentum as scum.
LaserGuy – I know from experience I will not get a good read on LaserGuy on D1. His posting has been light but he told us pre-game that it would be light which is totally acceptable, so I am making allowance for that. I don’t agree with much of what he has posted, like his town-scum list. I’m going to try to reread him tonight to form a better opinion.
ahippo – Is hiding behind his claim for the past three days and not posting. I’ve already expressed my opinion on his content thus far. I think his content has been scummy and I don’t clear players just because they claim.
JC_DADDY25 – Better content than Fred, but not by much. JC usually has a lot going on in his life and is a light poster, and has good content when he does post. I’m going to punt on this read and see if he posts (or doesn’t) tonight.
Freddino18 – I’m trying to give Fred a chance to develop as a mafia player, because when he makes it to late game he has excellent reads. The issue is that he doesn’t do a lot early game and a player that won’t post is a liability, right from the start. I would be willing to vote here if we don’t see some effort.
Wam – Wam’s content is unacceptably light and non-committal. Everything through Wednesday is fluff. Then he throws out some votes and some town reads, but with nothing to back up these reads, not even a statement that these reads are based on content or are just gut. He does give a reason for his Fred vote a few hours later. There’s just nothing there, so Wam is on my scum list pending his promised full readslist.
Grrr
Approximately 29 hours to deadline. We need the lurkers and those that have promised content to post something soon!

Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
So this has actually been a very interesting. As outset, I'll say my vote was like 50% reaction test 50% I genuinely didn't have anyone else I felt strongly about.Bop wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 8:19 pmI did! I'll consider that, I appreciate you linking the meta of another game to go off of. I'll try to read a bit of that game in the meantime.
It's the fact that your vote came directly after that got me. But I'll admit on re-reading your vote I must have assumed/projected your reasoning based on other people's comments at the time re: Freddino's engagement.
However as to the second pointI shouldn't have to ask why you've voted! If there's a reason, would it not behoove you to begin with it? I certainly don't feel better that you've got no stated reason at all. This is your current response when being directly asked. So should I ask or wait for you to make others gleam the answer based on past behavior?
Like I said at the outset, I didn't really have a strong read on any of my bottom players, just sort of had them PoE. Fred is a hard player to read and is usually very low effort D1 so I wanted to see what happened if I poked him a bit. I honestly wasn't super optimistic about it because in our last game he was run up to like L-2 and didn't seem to really care at all. So Fred being kinda defensive about his (lack) of content and you and heury jumping to his defense, and Wam and Moody jumping to wagon him I feel is all very valuable.
I think that Fred's content at face value is a hard null. Thinking about it more, I think heury's reaction to the multiball comment is super townie--he sees that Fred has similar text in his role to his own and assumes it's Town. Your reaction I'm more skeptical of because you don't seem to have a good reason to defend Fred and seem to be more looking for an excuse to scumread me and given that I'm in the running for elimination today, it feels very calculated and pings me hard.
Going to give Wam a slight townlean and Moody a slight scumlean. Bop to scumlean. Heury can be Town.
I'll have to dissect the more marginal responses later if I have time.
Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
Sorry for lurk. Sometimes life happens.
Your skepticism is extremely reasonable. I don't really have a strong refutation other than a long absence and ... y'know other life stuff. So hopefully day two I can win you over, assuming we both make it. If anything I'm more suspicious of being buttered by scum than being accused by scum, y'know?
Plan for my power is still random number, FWIW.
I appreciate this Boomfrog.
I also appreciate this, bessie!bessie wrote:ahippo – Is hiding behind his claim for the past three days and not posting. I’ve already expressed my opinion on his content thus far. I think his content has been scummy and I don’t clear players just because they claim.

Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
Long absence from the mafia forums, I mean. And other life stuff for the last few days. Realized that could have been better worded.

Have you done this before in previous games off-site?ahippo wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2025 8:02 pm Honestly, I'm doing a lot of catchup on what the vibes are like. I really don't like being cagey and dodging direct questions. Is it suspicious to claim a role D1? Is it considered, like, rude? Or bad play? I mean if it is bad play, I could just own up to being a bad player.
Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
I've been playing social deduction games for decades. These specific forums, as I remember them are particularly high-level. So what would come across as just normal stuff in your average social deduction game gets chewed to pieces on xkcd mafia.
Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
I have played forum mafia with friends off-site that were horribly balanced and gave roles based on the hosts favorites. So I can understand that. However, is that a yes or no to my question? Have you claimed before, since you asked if claiming a role is suspicious, I was wondering if you've done it before.

@bessie for this reason it feels unfair to go into more detail about my read. But basically it goes down to if I believe fred could be fake town slipping
heuristically_alone - As I said I like the conviction of his last posts and this has raised him from neutral to townie.

Do you actually see it scummy or is it more on principle of breaking spirit of the game?
When are going to share some more of your husband's music?
Yay!!!
Thoughts on Bessie: hear me out, but is Bessie playing too on point with her meta? My concern is her insistence on not changing vote from ahippo due to her chosen play style, which I don't blame town Bessie for following. And yet in this case it sounds like it's intentionally sticking to her believed consistent play style no matter what. Not a strong enough read to vote; I don't think I'm that insane yet.

On here? Not particularly in the past. But since then I've just had enough general life experiences where heart-on-sleeve honesty was just the better decision in the long run. Both in games and about IRL problems, so I tend to default to it more.EGW wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 5:10 am I have played forum mafia with friends off-site that were horribly balanced and gave roles based on the hosts favorites. Yes, good call. I'm more suspicious that Boomfrog is scum, cuz I'm exactly the kinda player you can "butter up" so to speak, so that I use my ability on them. Bessie would be perfectly fine with me dying today, and her reasons for suspecting me are pretty understandable. Also be sure to be specific who you are suspicious of in this sentence.
Re: Tales of Zestiria mafia Day 1
something somethign crayons something something, why would you not claim miller d1? if i get a scum result at the start of d3 i'm sure people would say it's awfully convenient i chose then to claim miller.
@tehbubbles: you hate and are bad at D1. i hate D1 and am bad at the whole game. we are not the same.
teh bubbles scumreading heury for piling on mak's vote reeeks of omgus. what kind of pants-on-head scum player goes "OH GREAT A CHANCE FOR ME TO PUT A SECOND VOTE ON A PLAYER EARLY ON DAY ONE IN A 15 PLAYER GAME, THAT WILL CLINCH THE VICTORY FOR THE SCUM TEAM". Nobody. If a wagon forms then we got something work critically examining.
@sabrar you can keep defending me if you want, though you did say i'm perfect so i guess you are
my thoughts on the "wagons" such as they are:
- ahippo's claim struck me as townie, not joining that one
- are we just voting fred because he doesn't play the way you guys like to play because if we're voting people off for that then i'll opt out because i'll be next on the list
- what did heury do wrong? it seems like the vote for bubbles is part of it?
- what has BOOMFROG done? I've seen the posts but it doesn't make sense to me. boomfrog seems like boomfrog
i'm not voting for ahippo or fred. that are not scummy to me right now. others are negotiable. if it was tomorrow i'd be going on the bubbles wagon, the OMGUS feels like something i'd do as scum, i tend to look for a reason i can vote and just kinda go with it if that makes sense? and like the OMGUS is a great excuse to vote.
In terms of activity I'm around for the next few hours. I don't like my chances of signing on before deadline - a quick check in and vote change about an two hours before (my lunch break), but the morning at work I'm gonna be busy.

I’m at the bottom of your scum list. Why didn’t you say anything about me me me?LaserGuy wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 4:08 am Like I said at the outset, I didn't really have a strong read on any of my bottom players, just sort of had them PoE.

This group is very accommodating for real life issues, just like the old forum, so I can forgive the absence as long as I know you’re interested playing, and will catch up when you can. I look forward to seeing more content from you.ahippo wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 4:59 am Sorry for lurk. Sometimes life happens.

I don’t clear on claims because claims can be faked, so I see it as scummy. If it’s a very early real claim for no reason (like something mechanical), then I feel it is against the spirit of the game and the claimant is taking away some of the fun.heuristically_alone wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 5:29 amDo you actually see it scummy or is it more on principle of breaking spirit of the game?

This is not my reason, not at all. Everyone should be able to play how they like, as long as they follow the rules and are courteous to their fellow players. My issue with Fred is getting him to post any content that isn’t fluff. And I will continue to prod him for that content.
