There's a couple of answers in the actual comic that are a with a number which get made into that many a's, so ignoring the apostrophe doesn't seem like that would disqualify it. It was not in the actual comic, I just thought of something else that fit with the concept.

My main issue was more that crosswords don't typically have 2-letter words. (And, like ratammer said, they're not actually apostrophes, though I could see crossword makers ignoring them anyways.)
