There's currently a countdown at the top of the site, and a line has started to appear, Time-style, in the corner of the image it's using as a background. Someone has set up a page that automatically adds the new image whenever it updates: https://munvoseli.github.io/xkcd-countdown/

Now that a curve and a second bit of line has appeared, I'm gonna go wildly speculate, that it's the vertical stabiliser of an aircraft.
