All right, I'm not sure we haven't done this before on the Discord, but let's do an "Out of Character" round: send me songs that are quite different from the usual material of the artist/band, songs that are the odd one out in the album they're on or in the entire discography.
Deadline is 25th of January.

I forgot to add, that I'd like if you added a few lines explaining what makes the song stand out. Mostly for my own amusement, but also partly for the benefit of those who aren't familiar with the album or the style of the musician(s) in question. Thank you.

Reminder that the deadline will happen a little over 24 hours from now. I hope you were using all this time to think of really good stuff to send in, because I haven't received too many songs yet.

I think I'll extend this a couple days (let's go with the 28th), because it isn't going to be much of a contest as it stands.

All right, this is going to be small one:
  1. The kind of band that spends the whole A-side of a record on a 20+ min. neoclassical progressive-rock concept piece about a giant armadillo tank ends the B-side with a '50s-throwback boogie/doo-wop tribute to their recording engineer: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Are You Ready Eddy?
  2. This isn't the only somber Kansas song, but the acoustic guitar and violins are unusual for a band normally somewhere between hard rock and prog rock. Amusingly it's one of their most well-known songs: Kansas - Dust In The Wind
  3. It's in a completely different style from any other REM song, being piano-based rather than guitar-based, and having intentionally more straightforward lyrics aimed at teenagers: R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts
As usual, the deadline is one week away, on the delightfully alliterative 5th of February

The votes have been counted and the results are in. Tied for second place:
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Are You Ready, Eddy? submitted by commodorejohn
and
R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts submitted by ratammer
with three points each. Thus, the song in first place is:
Kansas - Dust In The Wind submitted by yours truly.
Thanks to everyone who took part by submitting a song or voting.

Code: Select all

						ratammer	john	somi	heury	total
commodorejohn	ELP - Are You Ready Eddy?	1 -	2	0	3
somitomi	Kansas - Dust In The Wind	2 2	-	0,5	4,5
ratammer	R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts	- 1	1	1	3
Since I just ran this one, it's up to ramatter and commodorejohn to decide who gets the next round.

To submit a love song or not to submit a love song? That is the question.

I know we're in the middle of a round but I think this is the sort of question that needs asking well in advance - if there was going to be a round where the theme was "songs you've created yourself", would there be interest in it? We've done it before on the forum and on Discord, but I think there tends to be less participation than normal, so it's best to know if people would actually want to.

I'm always up for it, but yeah, I dunno how much general interest there would be.

I'd be up for it, but I need to figure out why my homemade mic preamp doesn't work first. I think some of you have heard every halfway decent recording I've made so far.

Okeedokee, the results are in! Congratulations to somitomi - who just went, and our second-place result was unfortunately disqualified since they didn't get their votes in, so LingEarth, you're probably up next, if you want it ;)

I sent in my votes last night, didn't I?

...darnit I somehow managed to PM them to myself instead

Probably wouldn't have affected the rankings much anyway ig

That might have happened if you tried sending it as a response to the post where you initially sent your submission - that would send it to the sender of that post, i.e. you.

Anyway, congrats somi!
